Women in Horror Month: Researching Women in Comics– Guest Post by Rachel Hoover, Librarian of the Dead

Rachel Hoover is a librarian and aspiring writer living in the Chicago area. She runs the blog Librarian of the Dead, where she blogs about the sorts of things you’d expect from such a title. She writes frequently about the horror genre–whether it’s books, comics, movies or games– as well as gravestone art, cementeries, and other items or topics that are dark, spine-chilling or have something interesting to say about our relationship with fear or death. Rachel is an official participant in Women in Horror Month this year, and is spotlighting women in horror comics this month.

With comics and graphic novels such a big topic in libraries right now, we wondered how you discover horror comics created by women, and Rachel offered to share her research strategies. It takes some work, but there are some interesting surprises. Until Rachel wrote about it, I had no idea Nancy A. Collins, who won the Bram Stoker Award for Sunglasses After Dark, also wrote for comics, including Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing! On Researching Women in Horror Comics

In honor of Women in Horror Month , an annual event put on by the Viscera Organization each February, I’ve been writing about Women in Horror Comics for a weekly series on my blog, Librarian of the Dead.

The goal of WiHM is to provide exposure, support and education about the typically underrepresented women working in the horror genre. So each Monday, I’m featuring a specific female writer or artist that works on horror comics, discussing their work, and asking them a few questions about the industry, what influences them and what advice they have for aspiring comic creators.

I came up with this project was because I couldn’t think of that many women working on horror series that I read or was aware of. It’s not always easy to stumble upon the names of all the artists, colorists, pencillers, letterers that make up one issue of a comic, one graphic novel, let alone the many people that could contribute to work on a trade paperback that collects multiple comic issues. It’s even harder when you’re only looking for women in one genre.

Since I am an actual librarian (that blog title isn’t just for fun!) I was up to the challenge. I used a couple of different strategies. No one had already created the kind of resource I was looking for, so I went with the next best thing: a list of women working in comics in general, and I found a nice long one on Wikipedia.

Part of my work was looking through lists like this and trying to either identify horror titles, or watch for publishers that I knew did horror series (Dark Horse, for example). I also worked the other way around sometimes, looking up a specific comic series or a graphic novel and checking if they had any women working for them. The main websites that I used to explore names and titles were things like Comic Book DB, Comic Vine, and  DeviantART, as well as the publisher and convention websites.

Librarians looking to stock female comic creators on their shelves should dig deep into the comics or graphic novels they already read and seek out the names of all of the writers and artists who have contributed to it. Research their careers and you’ll find new titles to check out. But be open to seeking out independent comics, there are a lot of wonderful unknown writers and artists that self-publish or work with indie publishers. They may not have easily-available trade paperbacks, and most libraries don’t stock individual issues of comics, but what about buying digital issues and loading them onto a tablet? Slap a barcode on that device and you still get circulation stats!

I would also recommend going to comic conventions and visiting with the female comic creators and artists that are there, talk to them about what they’re working on right now, what they’re reading and other women in the field who do work they enjoy. Once you start learning their names you’ll see them everywhere and realize what you and your library users were missing out on before. Maybe you can inspire them to become a fan of something they wouldn’t have picked up on their own. Maybe the girls and women in your community will even try their hand and writing or drawing their own comics when they see the possibilities. It’s a win-win: you and your library benefit, and so do the women out there already creating comics.

Women in Horror Month: In Praise of Scribbling Women (and Louisa May Alcott)!

It’s Women in Horror Month, that time of year when we recognize the amazing women who celebrate and create the horror genre. When it comes to horror fiction, there don’t seem to be very many names that appear in the past. Of course, there’s always Mary Shelley, but, while she was exceptional in many ways, she certainly wasn’t the only woman of her time writing gothic and horror stories .

Anyone who is surprised by this hasn’t read Little Women. Here’s Jo March, the most unconventional of the four March sisters, burning up with her desire to write:

Every few weeks she would shut herself up into her room, put on her scribbling suit, and “fall into a vortex,” as she expressed it, writing away at her novel with all her heart and soul, for till that was finished she could find no peace.

Jo’s family is much more supportive of her than most families were: writing was not only considered unsuitable for women, but unhealthy (and that’s literal– if you want to read a seriously twisted horror story, try Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s semi-autobiographical story “The Yellow Wallpaper”). But at the same time, the reality of daily life meant that women somehow had to support their families, and many of them did it by writing (KC Redding-Gonzales has written about it here).  The writing that earned a steady paycheck, though, was pulp fiction for magazines and newspapers– “sensational stories” that gave their readers thrills, chills, romance, and murder. So that’s what Jo does. Her publisher “rejected any but thrilling tales” so that’s what she wrote, but with no name attached. Little Women‘s author, Louisa May Alcott, supported her family by writing sensational stories for ten years under a pen name, including a novel, A Long and Fatal Love Chase. But in the end, conventional Louisa won out, and, as in Little Women, where Jo finally gives up her writing, she stopped (this review from Stephen King has more on Louisa).

Alcott, Gilman, and the fictional Jo are just three examples from that time, though (even Frankenstein was first published under a pseudonym)– and we can’t know, really, how many women supplied horror, romance, suspense, ghost stories, and gothic fiction for pulp magazines, newspapers, and even three volume novels, since so many of them, like Jo, left their work unsigned, or like Alcott, wrote under a pen name. They did it because they loved writing, or needed money, or both, and whether they were proud of their work or ashamed of it, these scribbling women shaped popular culture. Many of them may be nameless, but they shouldn’t be forgotten.

Girls Gone Missing? Halloween and Monster Movies for Kids

Margot Magowan runs the blog Reel Girl , which focuses on gender equality in the media (mostly on the representation, or lack thereof,  of girls) does a regular feature called “Girls Gone Missing”. With Halloween just around the corner, she did a Halloween edition of this feature and shared her impressions of the three Halloween/monster movies for children out this fall, ParaNorman, Hotel Transylvania, and Frankenweenie. noting that in all three movies there is a major skew toward male leads and secondary characters, with almost no female characters in any of them. Margot and the Reel Girl community see this as a major problem, not just for these movies but for children’s movies in general, because there’s no reason that some of these male characters couldn’t be girls without the story changing at all. To paraphrase one of her commenters, does the story in ParaNorman change that much if Norman becomes Norma?

There are so many girls who love Halloween and monsters and movies about them, who grow up to be women who love Halloween and monsters and movies about them. So why should they be left out of the story, or a token character? But it’s one thing to identify the movies girls are missing from and another to offer options that show strong girls taking the lead. So, I asked Margot:

 

What do you recommend as far as monster movies intended for kids, then? As the editor for MonsterLibrarian.com and the mother of a monster-loving boy with a sister willing to go along for the ride I’d be interested in what you DO think are good choices. We held Monster Movie Month in July, which, while mostly at choices for adults, was inspired by my son’s love of the classic movies, and the three of us picked some movie choices parents could share with their kids, but I’d love to know what you think. Halloween is our busiest month of the year and our children’s section is one of the most popular parts of our site and that’s something I would love to share there.

As a Halloween title, I’ll toss in the Charlie Brown Halloween special.

The general portrayal of women in horror movies also came up in the discussion, but that’s kind of irrelevant to my question (although it’s something I would be happy to start an individual post for if you want). For those of you reading this, do you agree with their choices for Halloween and monster movies that have gender equality (or at least strong female characters who haven’t been sexualized)?
