Speak No Evil is an unusual book in that while it has some mild supernatural elements, is really about the often unspeakable horror of what humans do to each other.  Melody is a selectively mute 16 year old girl in foster care, going through court-mandated therapy after stabbing a popular boy at her high school. The therapist, Dr. Roger Kane, needs to get Melody to speak so she can make a statement about the events that led to the stabbing and the case can be resolved.

Melody has a gift with music that is almost supernatural, and a unique backstory. Her biracial mother and her family belonged to an evangelical snake-handling church, and her Cherokee father reached an agreement with Melody’s mother and the church’s pastor that he would care for the snakes, healing and releasing them when they were ill and replacing them with newly caught ones. Melody, while not allowed near the snakes, can charm them with her singing. When her parents die, she is removed from her uncle’s care after he threatens her with a rattlesnake, and she enters the foster care system. Melody has a loving, long term relationship with her Native American foster mother, a wise woman who encourages Melody’s singing. Unfortunately, her foster mother is elderly and becomes ill. Melody has to go to a different placement with a family that overlooks disturbing behavior on the part of their son that eventually results in violence towards her, and then a placement with a different family that results in even more traumatic experiences, bullying at school, and, after she tells her social worker what happened, a life-threatening assault. The icky, vicious, and vile things done to Melody are very convincingly written, a punch to the gut. This combination of circumstances over time has convinced Melody that every time she speaks up, something terrible happens, so she refuses to speak, even to defend herself. It’s a heartbreaking story.

Her therapist is able to get her to open up by approaching her through her love of music.  Choosing music that communicates her feelings from her MP3 player starts to get Melody to open up, bit by bit. Most of the music is original to the book;  it was written by Lucas Astor and is attributed either to Melody (such as “Rattlesnake Song”, which she sings spontaneously to charm snakes) or appears in the story as unnamed choices from her MP3 player. The lyrics are a perfect fit to the story, and I only wish that the music had been recorded.

Dr. Kane’s nonconfrontational approach to what are clearly symptoms of PTSD allows Melody to share at her own pace, building up her comfort level until she’s able to communicate verbally. Gardner segues smoothly between therapy sessions and Melody’s memories, but the memories are out of order chronologically, which makes it a little difficult to follow the story. While I found the therapist and his approach interesting, I was somewhat surprised by his level of informality with Melody and his strong dislike of  Melody’s foster mother (not the most insightful person, but obviously trying to make things work). Melody’s strong, positive relationship with her caseworker, Miss Prescott, was also surprising, as Miss Prescott left Melody in terrible situations, completely obliviously, two separate times.  Gardner makes it clear, though, that both adults are solidly in Melody’s corner.

In a note, Gardner writes that the story comes in part from her personal experiences, and her writing gives a powerful voice to Melody and other girls and women who feel they cannot speak to defend and protect themselves. Speak No Evil is certainly a novel for the #MeToo era. I’m not sure it belongs in the horror genre, but it certainly contains horrors, and it isn’t a book that will be forgotten easily.  Recommended for high school and YA library collections.

The Last Séance: Tales of the Supernatural contains twenty short stories of the occult and supernatural penned by the Queen of Mystery, Agatha Christie. While each of the stories has unique aspects, a few stood out over the rest as exceptionally well executed. “The Last Séance” tells the story of an exhausted medium holding a session for a woman with disastrous results. In “Philomel Cottage”, heiress Alix King takes a new husband whose past she knows nothing about. An elderly widow receives messages from her deceased husband through a wireless set in “Wireless”. In “The Strange Case of Sir Arthur Carmichael”, the titular character has taken on the characteristics of a cat that had been killed by the lady of the house. “The Dressmaker’s Doll”, undoubtedly the best story in the collection, involves a doll that suddenly appears in a dressmaker’s workroom, and is found to move about the room when it is unoccupied.

There are a few stories where Christie’s famous detectives, Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, get involved, too. The most entertaining of these takes is “The Flock of Geryon”, in which Poirot aids an heiress in investigating a dangerous cult. In “The Idol House of Astarte”, members of the Tuesday Night Club gather to discuss the strange circumstances of a murder at a fancy dress party, and the club wants Miss Marple’s opinion on the case.

The book contains a bibliography of books and magazines where her short stories were first published, as well as alternate titles for the stories if applicable.

While the subtitle of the book indicates that the stories contained in its pages are supernatural, this is somewhat deceiving. There are aspects of the occult and supernatural in the stories, but most of them have quite logical explanations to them. Another topic to address is language used in the stories. Christie’s treatment of the Asian culture is not what we would call respectful now. By using the term Oriental and associating Asian characters in her stories as mysterious, sly, and similar, it is definitely problematic. Treatment of mental illness is also something readers needs to be aware of with works from this time period. For instance, it is not unusual to see the terms “loon” or “loonies” used.

None of that is to say I disliked the book. On the contrary, I enjoyed this, and it was a quick read. Christie had a unique way of crafting her stories, and there is a good reason why she is called the Queen of Mystery. I would not, however, call her the Queen of the Supernatural. I would recommend this for readers who are Christie fans, or for those who aren’t quite ready to get into horror. This might be good for anyone who wants to explore spooky tales without the extremes the genre can get into. Recommended.

‘Tis the season for ghost stories, and with so many out there, Lisa Morton and Leslie S. Klinger had some difficult choices about what to include in this anthology. They have chosen eighteen tales of the supernatural with varying tone, from comic to terrifying, by authors well-known for their ability with supernatural fiction, authors from both Europe and America, authors well-known for their other works who also wrote supernatural fiction, and some authors barely known to the reading public at all.  There is a brief introduction, and each story is preceded with a short paragraph about the author and his works. When necessary, the editors included annotations, but the annotations do not impede the flow of the story; rather, they enrich it.

The anthology begins with a ballad, “Sweet William’s Ghost”,  which is followed by a gothic tale by Johann August Apel, whose work may have inspired the beginnings of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Sir Walter Scott’s “The Tapestried Chamber”, which Morton and Klinger identify as the first modern ghost story, is next.  They then cross the ocean to America for the next two stories, “The Gray Champion” by Nathaniel Hawthorne and “Ligieia” by Edgar Allan Poe. Certainly no one can argue with either Poe’s brilliance or madness in his writing, and both are depicted in full force here.

Three lesser-known  women writers of supernatural fiction all write powerfully of ghosts driven by their emotions towards the ones they left behind. “Since I Died” by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps is a compelling vision of what follows death, narrated by a just-deceased woman observing her lover’s grief, and is one of the outstanding stories in the book. “The Shell of Sense” by the little-known Olivia Howard Dunbar, details the vengeance, and eventually forgiveness, of a recently-deceased wife on her husband and sister when she discovers they have fallen in love.  In Georgia Wood Pangborn’s “The Substitute”, a lonely woman is visited by a friend who is desperately in need of her help.

Charles Dickens, M.R. James, Edith Wharton, Henry James, and Charlotte  (Mrs. J.H.) Riddell all tell stories of mysterious and terrifying ghosts.  Ambrose Bierce creats a nightmarish, fantastical world in “An Inhabitant of Carcosa”, and Frank Stockton’s “The Philosophy of Relative Existences” is almost science-fictional in nature, a thoughtful puzzle of a story.  Arthur Machen’s “The Bowmen” , based on actual news reports, described a battle during World War I where one of the British servicemen summoned St. George and his bowmen to defeat the Germans. The brief descriptions of the war, and the detail in which Machen is able to vividly portray the men and their despair in very few words, are very powerful. One of my favorites, a surprise to me, was Mark Twain’s “A Ghost Story”, which had me laughing out loud.

The variety in this collection of ghost stories is impressive, and I really appreciated the inclusion of both lesser-known women writers of supernatural fiction, and supernatural stories by writers better known for other work. Over the past several years I have done a lot of reading on my own on early women writers of supernatural fiction and until very recently it’s been difficult to find any work by some of them at all– and for those who are better known for their other writing, their supernatural tales have often been disregarded or kept under wraps. It would be easy to lean back on just a few authors already known for their ghost stories, but the effort that went into making sure this carefully curated anthology was varied in its authors and contents is something I really appreciate. Ghost Stories: Classic Tales of Horror and Suspense is a perfect read for this Halloween season.
