In Grave Predictions, Drew Ford has selected some of the best representations of post-apocalyptic and dystopian short fiction available: stories both beautiful and terrifying. These include tales from some of the most outstanding authors of the genre, such as Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Philip K. Dick, and Ursula K. Le Guin.  Each story is far ahead of its time, with its own distinct presentation of the future, and evokes a range of emotions from the reader. It’s amazing how science fiction writers have more of a pulse on the future than most people care to recognize.

Eugene Mouton’s “The End of the World,” first published in 1872, presents a tragic story about global warming before it even had a name, and culminates in the proclamation that “THE EARTH IS DEAD.” In W. E. B. Du Bois’ “The Comet” (1920), Jim Davis, an African-American man, is sent down to the vaults on a task by the bank president, only to emerge to cold, dead world. It’s reminiscent of the Twilight Zone’s “Time Enough at Last” in that respect. As he makes his way down the city streets he finds Julia, a wealthy white woman, who is seemingly the other survivor. The theme of racial tensions and the breaking down and reconstruction of barriers is central to this story. Bradbury’s “The Pedestrian” (1951) focuses on a writer who walks aimlessly through the city at night when he is stopped by robotic police for aberrant behavior. No one walks around the streets anymore when they have the warm glow of their televisions screens, after all. “Upon the Dull Earth” (1954), by Philip K. Dick is the tragic story of Silvia, Rick, and the fate of the world. Silvia summons angels, believing they are her ancestors who will someday usher her home. She intends to use lamb’s blood, but when she accidentally draws her own blood, they appear to take her home. Rick cannot accept her death, and tries to bring her back, even though it may mean the destruction of his world. In Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.’s “2 B R 0 2 B” (1962), the United States population has been  limited to forty million people: someone must die in order for someone else to be born. Edward Wehling, Jr.’s wife is about to have triplets, but there is only one volunteer for euthanasia. Desperate, he finds a last minute solution to ensure his children will live. There is a witness to Edward’s predicament, who makes a fateful decision as well.

Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” (1973); Brian M. Stableford’s “The Engineer and the Executioner” (1976); Stephen King’s “The End of the Whole Mess” (1986); Joe R. Lansdale’s “Tight Little Stitches in a Dead Man’s Back” (1992); Greg Bear’s “Judgment Engine”; Mark Samuels’ “The Black Mould” (2011); Ramsey Campbell’s “The Pretence” (2013); and Carmen Maria Machado’s “Inventory” (2013). Highly recommended.

Memorable Short Stories

 

After my last post on how short stories are awesome, it was suggested to me that maybe I could make a few recommendations. So here you go– my totally subjective choices. These are stories that I personally have found memorable– either because I never, ever want to read them again, or because they draw me back, again and again. A few of them may not be in print anymore, and some are considered classics (you might have read them in school) but some are relatively new. Some might be considered YA, but don’t feel excluded! They are great reading for us older folks too.  And I’d say nearly all of them have either a creep factor, or a fear factor (with the possible exception of “In The Jaws of Danger”. Almost all those images are clickable, just in case you’re interested in checking out these authors on your own. If you have a memorable short story of your own that you would like to share, I’d be very interested in your comments!

 “The Lurking Fear” by H.P. Lovecraft

My best friend in high school handed me her used copy of  The Lurking Fear and Other Stories and said “You’ve gotta read this”! I handed it back to her after reading just this story, and have never read Lovecraft since. It terrified me that much.

 “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson

Anyone who has made it through high school without reading “The Lottery” should go do it right now. It is a chilling tale.

 

“High Beams”, collected by Alvin Schwartz

I love to tell this story to kids at Halloween, but it’s hard to go wrong with any story by Alvin Schwartz.

“The Tell-tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe

Poe is a master of the short story form. “The Tell-tale Heart” is only one of many memorable stories he has written: others include “The Cask of Amontillado”, “The Masque of the Red Death”, and “The Fall of the House of Usher”.

“The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury

Bradbury is another master of the short story. This list would be a much longer one if I included every story by him that I have found memorable. If you can believe it, I first read this in elementary school as part of the Junior Great Books program. I always found “The Veldt” to be a creepy story, and now that I’m a parent living in a hyperreal world, it’s chilling. Other stories I considered listing here included “A Sound of Thunder”, “There Will Come Soft Rains”, “The Flying Machine”, “The Third Expedition”, and, of course, Bradbury’s homage to Poe and to monster movies, “Usher II”

 

“Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut

Ah, the nightmare of a world where everyone is required to be average. Welcome to the Monkey House, which contains “Harrison Bergeron” also has a memorable title story involving Ethical Suicide Parlors, and one of my favorite stories of redemption ever, “The Kid Nobody Could Handle.”

“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell

“Survivor” has nothing on this masterpiece about hunter and hunted.

“Leinengen Versus The Ants” by Carl Stephenson

I can’t think of a better illustration of “man vs. nature”, which is probably why this story appeared in my high school English textbook. By the way, this particular book I’ve linked to here also has some other great stories, including Ambrose Bierce’s “Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge” and Jack London’s “To Build a Fire”.

“We Can Get Them For You Wholesale” by Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman does a wonderful job with the short story form, be it in the flash fiction format used in Half Minute Horrors, the parody of “Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire”, or the poetic brutality of “Harlequin Valentine” (both in Fragile Things). “We Can Get Them For You Wholesale” is, for me, anyway, unforgettable.

“The Open Window” by Saki

Saki is brilliant. “The Open Window” is extremely creepy. Another story of his I find very thought-provoking is “The Toys of Peace”.

“The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

A hallucinatory, semi-autobiographical tale of one woman’s descent into madness, this is also a vivid illustration of how many women with intelligence and will were treated at the time that it was written.

 “Monster” by Kelly Link

“Monster” could have been just a tale about bullying gone horribly wrong. But it’s much more frightening than that. It’s nearly impossible to go wrong with this collection, though. There are notably creepy, weird, and fantastical stories in here. Kelly Link is a true artist.

 “In The Jaws of Danger” by Piers Anthony

That cover image illustrates “In The Jaws of Danger” pretty effectively. Who knew dentistry could be so hazardous? Young Extraterrestrials is a book I treasure. It is filled with great stories, as you would expect from anthologists like Greenberg, Waugh, and Asimov. I can’t begin to tell you how many of their anthologies I devoured as a kid. Unfortunately it is now out of print.

“Mother of Monsters” by Guy de Maupassant

This is a truly horrifying story of calculated and twisted cruelty to children in the name of profit and fashion. Maupassant doesn’t need to get graphic to illustrate the tragedy and horror of the situation and of the culture that encourages it.

“Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Alaya Dawn Johnson

This  fantastic story appears in the YA anthology Zombies vs. Unicorns. It’s about a zombie and a human who fall in love, and the sacrifices they both make to be together. There are many strong stories in the anthology, and it is well worth it to check it out.

 

“Nightfall” by Isaac Asimov

If the stars should appear for just one night in a thousand years, how would humanity react? The answer: not well. This is classic Asimov. I read it first in high school, and I keep coming back to it. Make sure you’ve got the story and not the novel.

 

 

 

What Banned Books Week Really Means

It’s kind of interesting to look at the opinions, or lack thereof, of the authors of banned books on censorship. R.L Stine, author of the Goosebumps series and many, many other books both scary and funny, doesn’t seem to have much to say. The Goosebumps series was #15 on the list 100 Most Banned/Challenged Books,1990-1999, and was still in the top 100 for the list for 2000-2009, and just last year was challenged in Kirbyville, Texas. But in interviews, he’s rarely asked about censorship of his books, and the most I could find was a comment from him from a chat on CNN that attempting to ban the Harry Potter books was “silly”. Maybe when you’ve written as many books as he has, one person, or school, or library, taking one book from a series with 100+ titles seems pretty insignificant (I’d love to really know what he thinks).

Stephen King, whose book Cujo has been challenged and banned in the past, has made it clear that he opposes book banning, but he’s also said that he doesn’t see it as a major issue. A writer writes, and if he’s defending his books, then he’s not writing. I get that, but he also says he believes a defense should be mounted– but by whom? In a speech he gave titled ” I Want To Be Typhoid Stevie” in 1997 he said that when his books are challenged or banned, he tells kids this:

Don’t get mad, get even… Run, don’t walk, to the nearest nonschool library or to the local bookstore and get whatever it was that they banned. Read whatever they’re trying to keep out of your eyes and your brain, because that’s exactly what you need to know.

His philosophy hasn’t really changed too much. I don’t totally agree with him– I think it’s important for kids to stand up for their right to read, and while you certainly can find at least some of his books there (he’s written so many), not everyone has easy access to a library or bookstore where they can easily acquire a challenged or banned book, or owns an ereader (you can now buy his books online, and some of them are only available as ebooks). Maybe if you tear the house apart you’ll find that your dad has a secret stash (which is how I first tripped over King’s books). Or maybe not. If he doesn’t protest challenges to his books, and kids don’t, who in a divided community will provide that defense? A school librarian may be an amazing advocate who carries the day… but it scares me just to think about doing it myself.

But, he points out, and I think this is a point well taken, in the United States, we all have the right to protest a challenge to a book, or a book banning, to give copies of a banned book away openly (as the Kurt Vonnegut Library did in a recent controversy over Slaughterhouse-Five), or to acquire a banned book without persecution. There are parts of the world where that isn’t possible, and times in history when it has been vigorously enforced. Even though we aren’t living in one of those places, or through one of those times, and even though banning books is a serious issue here, he notes in a 1992 essay:

There are places in the world where the powers that be ban the author as well as the author’s works when the subject matter or mode of expression displeases said powers. Look at Salman Rushdie, now living under a death sentence, or Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who spent eight years in a prison camp for calling Josef Stalin “the boss” and had to run for the west to avoid another stay after he won the Nobel Prize for “The Gulag Archipelago.”

I discovered that Banned Books Week inspires defenders of human rights, who fight for freedom of speech and freedom of expression for writers and journalists who are witnesses to oppression and who live in or write about these places. In America, our right to stand up for the freedom to read resonates throughout the world. In the world of school librarianship, connectedness, collaboration, and social justice are essential concepts to share. Something for all of us to think about is the way Banned Books Week affects not just individual challenges here, but human rights around the world, and the courage to fight for freedom of expression in the face of danger.
