Sebastian Bell wakes up in the rain in the woods, completely disoriented, and without any memories except the name Anna. He hears screaming nearby and is convinced he’s witnessed a murder. Stumbling to the nearest house, a deteriorating Gothic heap called Blackheath, owned by the wealthy Hardcastle family, he discovers he is a guest at a bizarre weekend party commemorating the nineteenth anniversary of the death of young Thomas Hardcastle and also celebrating the arrival home of his older sister, Evelyn. In a striking similarity to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, the invited guests, all present the day Thomas Hardcastle died, are, for the most part unlikable, judgmental, selfish, and greedy, although a few have hidden, redeeming, characteristics. Some of them, or at least one of them, is a murderer. All of them are trapped at Blackheath. But that’s where the similarity ends.

In a reality-bending twist worthy of David Lynch, it turns out that everyone at the party is unwittingly repeating the same day over and over again. Sebastian (or is he Sebastian?), is told that he has eight opportunities to solve the murder and escape the cycle before he starts repeating the day again without memories and has to start the process over from scratch. In a surrealistic, time-traveling, body-hopping puzzle of a story with echoes of 1930s mystery novels, Gothic family secrets, and ominous suggestions about the future, Turton manages to say quite a lot about the human condition, the advantages and disadvantages of memory, the choices we make, and our ability to change, forgive, and redeem ourselves.

We see the story from our main character’s point of view. Since he’s disoriented, wounded, easily deceived, and has no idea what’s going on or who he actually is, it is completely bewildering and terrifying. It is work to keep track of the various threads of the plot as they twist and tangle with one another, but the story is compelling and worth the effort, and the payoff is fantastic.

I have already said too much and can’t say more without completely spoiling the plot. If you’re bored with straightforward mystery novels or enjoyed The Time Traveler’s Wife, and are ready to suspend disbelief, this is a perfect choice. Highly recommended.

On the surface, it seems like a great plot.  The future United States still operates under our current political system, but has been fully hijacked by evil capitalistic pig warmongers who have made serfs (or slaves) out of most of the population.  Small groups called ‘factions’ are fighting back behind the scenes, trying to take America back for the people, and stopping the enslavement of the population.  If the idea had stopped there and been better written, this could have been a good book.  However, Faction 9 makes for a lackluster reading experience.  The plot is part of the problem: it is cluttered with unneccessary and distracting ideas, such as alien metallic insects and humans with feline DNA. These add nothing to the basic premise, and strain the story’s credibility.It will appeal to a select crowd, but would have been better suited to a comic book or graphic novel format.

The use of elaborate language and cartoonish portrayals of the characters also detract from the story.  One notable example of the language problem is saying that a character ‘strained to achieve colonic climax’ when sitting on the toilet. Character development is minimal at best, and cartoonish in the case of the villains.  The author throws in every cliché when describing the money-loving evildoers.  Gold toilets, eating only steak and lobster, toilet paper with the Constitution printed on it, seeing every female as a sexual target, all people are their slaves, money is God…you get the idea.  You can’t even hate the villains in this: they are so laughable you don’t feel any emotion about them.  The protagonists aren’t much better. There is little backstory on how they became revolutionaries fighting for the people, and you wind up not caring what happens to them.

The author does have skill, but it only comes in flashes.  The time spent describing the foolishness of government hurdles when trying to do something as simple as changing a computer password was excellent, and his description of prisons in the future showed good imagination.  But, those moments were too few, and it’s not enough to save the story. While most readers won’t want to slog through this, the book could find a place among YA readers, or people looking for any story that involves despising conservatives, in terms of politics. It will appeal to a select crowd, but would have been better suited to a comic book or graphic novel format.

Musings: “We Have Always Been At War With Eastasia” : Future-Proofing The News

         

 

The Monster Kid tells me he is writing a dystopian alternate history, beginning in 2012, where there is perpetual war.  “You know, like in the book where we have always been at war with Eastasia but then they change the news.”

In case you aren’t familiar with it, this is a reference to George Orwell’s 1984, in which the main character works in the “Ministry of Truth,” destroying or rewriting past news that doesn’t reflect the current reality the government wants people to buy into (in this case, an ongoing war with Eurasia ends and a new one with Eastasia begins, and history has to be rewritten to erase the war with Eurasia). Creepy, but in a fictional way, right?

Reality is so much worse. In M.T. Anderson’s YA biography of composer Dmitri Shostakovich, Symphony for the City of the Dead: Dmitri Shostakovich and the Siege of Leningrad, Anderson has to return to the reader again and again, to explain that there is no good way to untangle the contradictions in the stories about Shostakovich’s life, even the ones he told himself, because of the contortions the truth had to go through to be acceptable to the Stalinist regime and prevent him from suffering a truly horrific ending. Reading this, I realized that 1984 is a pale shadow of the reality of repression and brutality under the Soviet regime and its effects on the arts, literature, and the press, especially under Stalin (and that doesn’t even begin to cover the horrors of the siege of Leningrad). I can’t recommend this book highly enough– it’s an outstanding, if horrific, book for both older teens and adults.

In The Infernal Library, Daniel Kalder asserts that dictators have not only repressed the press and the arts,  in some places they even managed to completely erase history. Many of the little provinces and countries that were drawn in to the U.S.S.R. at the beginning of the 20th century had a limited number of literate people, and when the U.S.S.R. dissolved, the president of Turkmenistan completely invented a history and religion for his country, complete with his own cult of personality, and with no press and few additional books available for comparison (I don’t recommend this one for purchase, but the chapters on dictator literature from some of the lesser-known dictators are fascinating, so see if your library has it. Did you know Saddam Hussein wrote romance novels?)

So how can we keep this erasure and rewriting of history from happening, especially in our era of  “fake news”? Honestly, it’s pretty hard to do. History usually gets written by the winners, and, just like in 1984, it’s not that difficult to destroy and rewrite the version you want, or to make it impossible to report on anything that could make you look bad.  In Future-Proofing the News: Preserving the First Draft of History, Kathleen Hansen and Nora Paul report that even when nobody is deliberately trying to prevent the news from being accurately reported, time and environmental conditions can destroy it.  Many of the formats news has been recorded were ephemeral or are now obsolete. Newspapers and magnetic tapes get brittle, hyperlinks break, devices used to record and play back break down. And there is such a quantity of news that many places are unable to store it or make it accessible. Just as a concerted effort needs to be made to repress the press, concerted efforts need to be made to save the news of the past for the present and future. If you are a historian, journalist, archivist, librarian, or otherwise interested citizen, this is worth reading.

We can’t guarantee that primary sources will always be accurate in their reporting. Both in the past and present there have been a multiplicity of sources and points of view, although I’d say that’s truer today than ever before. But sometimes there is only fear shaping the reported facts, as was the case under Stalin, or there is nothing there at all, as in Turkmenistan, and that is terrifying. The free press is not an enemy: it is essential to keeping civic discourse, the arts and literature, and democracy, alive. When you vote tomorrow, keep that in mind.
