Gates of Paradise by Melissa de la Cruz

9781423157410_p0_v3_s260x420Okay, are you ready for the last one? Spoilers ahoy, because there is no way, at all, that I can talk about this without talking about everything.

So below the cut…

I am utterly disappointed with this book. I mean, it was great, and pretty and all happy-making with the endings (especially Oliver’s because the boy has been through enough!) I had a hard time putting it down.

And yet…

Really, Lucifer was so stupid to believe Jack and Mimi just got back together and turned evil after everything they went through for their true loves? I wouldn’t have trusted them a bit, and I’m not a nearly omnipotent pillar of evil.

And, SUPER SPOILER: Really even after so many Blue Bloods are revealed to be loyal to Lucifer and still trying to overthrow heaven, and still all evil and selfish and power-hungry, they’re all somehow redeemed by Allegra/Schuyler/Bliss? No questions asked, get into heaven free?

And Charles is still Uncorrupted after launching a genocide? And preventing redemption for the Blue Bloods for hundreds of years?

While Jack and Schuyler’s ending was sweet, the only ones that were really awesome were Oliver’s and Mimi and Kingsley’s. As for the rest of the book? It was way longer than it needed to be. It was all about finding out the major secret that was pretty easy to guess and not really all that influential. I mean it was the key to a major moment. But 200 pages of “What does this mean” for one moment was a little bit of a let down.

Of course, if I wasn’t so terribly invested in the characters I probably would have liked the last few books better. Cruz’s writing is lovely and thematically beautiful, but the over all plot was a bit discombobulated. 3/5- don’t regret reading it but probably won’t read again.
