T.V. Review: Dead Boy Detectives

Do you like paranormal detective series? Do you like Neil Gaiman? Loosely based off characters created by Neil Gaiman for the Sandman universe and definitely done in his trademark dark and whimsical style, this new Netflix series follows two ghosts, Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland, who are hiding from Death to help a world where the sheer population size has overwhelmed the systems of the afterlife and allowed people to fall through the cracks and get lost.

In the first episode we see the addition of Crystal, a psychic who is saved by the boys from possession by a demon. They team up to help others, from ghosts trapped in time, to victims of strange unseen monsters and magics, all while trying to outrun Death and her representatives.

While the series deals with grim situations and adult themes, Edwin and Charles were both teens when dying, and Crystal is also a young woman trying to find her place in the world. The series is fun, morbid and sweet. Those who miss Buffy or Supernatural will have a lot to enjoy here. It doesn’t shy away from a more modern take, including gay coded characters and modern stressors related to DEI, but ultimately it’s about hurt people trying to be good people and make the world a better place.

It’s a wonderful series that I highly recommend.
