Potions Inc is a reverse portal fantasy with a number of other rips on fantasy tropes. Randelgast Jones aches for adventure. His family owns a potions shop. His siblings are brilliant mages. But he dreams of something more…he’s just not sure what. His parents encourage him to start simply (with actually working toward it) and a lucky charm. But the lucky charm he finds is apparently an ancient and powerful artifact which promptly get stolen from him. Ran and his siblings begin an epic quest to reclaim the relic, in 1992 Seattle.It becomes real obvious that Ran may be dreaming of adventure, but he’s also a bit of a coward and lazy. He’s more the type who wishes to have adventured. He lives in a world where magic is real and his whole family is successful, but he cringes from actual work and responsibility.
I sympathize with Ran’s exasperated family. I enjoyed the book, am tickled at the reverse portal angle and am eager to see what trouble these siblings can get into in our world. Recommended.
