Graphic Novel Review: Punderworld v1 by Linda Sejic

Punderworld started as an art project by artist Linda Sejic, then became a Webtoon, now it’s out as a collected graphic novel. It’s a new take on the Hades and Persephone tale, framing it not as as a forced romance, but as a less toxic Romeo and Juliet tale.

Anyone on social media has likely seen frames from this tale shared often, as its wholesome take on the myth is pretty endearing. Here Persephone is the overworked, under appreciated Goddess of Spring, heavily controlled by her mother Demeter and isolated. And Hades is a introvert work-a-holic in a family of party boys. They harbor secret crushes on each other, but only get the urge to act on them thanks to the meddling of Zeus, That disaster leaves them trapped in the Underworld, with each other.

The art is gorgeous, the concept fun and modern. I highly recommend it for fantasy readers and mythological buffs. It’s a wonderful addition to non-superhero graphic novel collections.
