We are definitely building to something big here. While the Struckers try to come to terms with what Otto revealed to them last episode (their great grandparents were terrorists and the kids have the same powers), Esme, the telepath the MU crew just rescued goes a little crazy in her attempts to rescue her family for the SS’s tender care. She (maybe with her powers) manipulated Thunderbird into approving a straight up attack on Trask Industries to liberate mutants.
Turner continues his path down gleeful evil. I’m still not convinced he won’t be given a redemption arc, like Reed Strucker, but I know Dr. Campbell won’t. Turner expects MU to hit Trask, even if no one else does. His suspicions pay off and he lands not just Blink and Dreamer in his cages, but the Strucker kids too.
The Gifted has flirted with becoming too heavy-handed with the themes of prejudice (even if it is all inspired by real life examples, sadly), but in this episode we really feel it. We understand Jace’s pain, but want to smack him back to sense and out of these vindictive, outright mean maneuvers. He is being a bad guy! We don’t want him hurt more, but we do want him to realize he’s on the wrong side of things, and stop being a douche.
We wish there was a better way to liberate the wrongly imprisoned (and tortured) mutants, but like Polaris, I think we’re tired of trying to take the higher road. We’re ready to shut down our morality for a little bit and get some things done.
And while we’re super proud of Andy and Lauren for maintaining their humanity when the easy, safe thing to do would have been to unleash their powers and escape, we’re also scared of the damage their soft-heartedness might end up doing to our favorite mutant team…
